YourLink Technical Support - Phishing & Spoofing - Prevent Identity Theft

What is Identitiy Theft?

Identity theft or identity fraud (true name fraud) is the taking of the victim’s identity to obtain credit, credit cards from banks and retailers, steal money from the victim’s existing accounts, apply for loans, establish accounts with utility companies, rent an apartment, file bankruptcy or obtain a job using the victim’s name. The Impersonator steals thousands of dollars in the victim’s name without the victim even knowing about it for months or even years. Recently criminals have been using the victim’s identity to commit crimes ranging from traffic infractions to felonies.

How does an imposter steal your identity?

Both "phishing" & "spoofing" are 2 common methods used by criminals to steal your indentity.

Phishing emails are messages that claim to be from a legitimate business or organization that you may deal with on a regular basis. The message may ask you to submit :updated" information or "confirm" account information. A phishing message will seem urgent and contain language that will try to pressure you that you must submit personal information on a strict deadline or face consequences.

Phishing is a scam where Internet fraudsters send spam messages to reel in unsuspecting victims. Spoofing is when the email messages direct you to websites that look legitimate, even identical to the authentic organization, but the counterfeit sites exist only to trick you into revealing personal information. Once the fraudsters have your information, they can fake your identity, run up bills, or commit crimes in your name without your knowledge. Be very careful!

Any reputable business will not solicit information from you, especially not in an impersonal email. Never answer an email that does this and do not give out personal and/or financial information unless you have initiated the contact and you are sure that the person/organization you are dealing with is reliable and on the up-and-up.
